Public access and community
Seeing AEDs in public place offers peace of mind and empowers people to save lives
Public access defibrillators and quick action from bystanders during sudden cardiac arrest can give people a greater chance of survival by delivering a life-saving shock before emergency responders arrive. That’s why we’re often the first call organisations make when public access defibrillators are required in public access areas

Do I need a public access defibrillator?

Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) are automated external defibrillators (AEDs) placed in public areas and community spaces around Australia, so everyone has access to them in the case of a cardiac emergency. It’s estimated that 90 percent of cardiac arrest cases that happen outside of hospitals are fatal – which makes publicly accessible emergency equipment essential.
Anyone can use a PAD / AED
Imagine a person clasps their chest, gasping, and collapses in front of you in a public space. There’s no one else around, but there is an AED nearby. In these situations, emergency services often can’t make it in time – so AEDs fill that time-critical gap, raising survival rates to up to 75 percent or more. The only problem is, many people are hesitant to use them or worry they’ll hurt the person.
Fact: You don’t have to be trained to open and operate an AED in an emergency situation. Our defibrillators offer the latest technology, including step-by-step voice prompts to guide untrained bystanders to be able to offer assistance when required. An AED will only deliver a shock if it detects a shockable heart rhythm in a patient. You cannot harm someone with an AED.
Remember in a cardiac emergency the emergency service operators will instruct the caller (even if it is a member of the public) to locate the nearest AED and bring it to the patient.

Did you know?
All AED devices automatically check that the patient is suffering a cardiac arrest before activating, removing any risk of shocking someone in error. The device simply won’t shock unless it detects a shockable rhythm, so it’s safe to use.
AEDs were designed to be used by virtually anyone.
